5 Reasons Spending Time Outdoors is Good For You- According to Science!

outdoor health benefits

We are told time and time again that spending time outside is good for your health, and that it has countless health benefits.

Whether you are down and depressed, or feeling a bit sickly, or having weakness- the go to advice for getting out of a rut is oftentimes to soak in some sun!

Nature seems to have that effect- and after hours and hours of staying under fluorescent lighting and man-made artificial air, it seems only fitting to think that after countless centuries and generations of health in the outdoors, that being outdoors is the healthy way to go!

Sometimes, all these home remedies that people suggest to us left and right are questionable, and we wonder about their credibility. After all, what a waste of time it would be if we go through the trouble for something that provides no benefit?

Thankfully, the advice so often handed out to spend time outdoors is backed by science! Psychologists and researchers are continuously uncovering more and more reasons that spending time ourdoors is good for you!

Here are 5 reasons why spending time outdoors is actually good for your health!

  • Nature is a stress reliever!

Being outdoors effects us positively not only physically, but mentally as well. What we experience mentally is the most influential factor in our physical health- mind matters!

In one study, researchers found that there was a significant decrease in heart rate and in cortisol levels- the hormone that identifies stress- for test subjects spending time in the woods when compared to those in the city!

  • The great outdoors- the great energy generator!

Based on other studies, spending time outdoors can actually eliminate fatigue and increase energy levels! By bringing oneself into a natural environment, you can increase your energy levels and change your focus and view from the artificial environments of the indoors!

In a study measuring people’s energy levels while looking at just pictures of the great outdoors,  it was found that the subjects actually experienced an increase in energy by simply looking at a scene in nature- whereas looking at a cityscape produced no effects!

  • Nature brings you back into focus!

Just as going outdoors and even simply looking at pictures of the outdoors can increase energy levels, natural environments have been proved to improve focus and concentration as well!

In one study, distracted workers were given options of leisure in the city and in nature- and those who took walks in nature had significantly higher levels of focus and better concentration and attention spans!

  • The outdoors can battle depression and anxiety!

The outdoors seems to have lasting, incredible effects on all things mental health- in return, this directly impacts your physical health!

In addition to focus, concentration, energy and stress levels,  nature has also been proven to be incredibly beneficial in fighting off depression and anxiety!

In one study[about 10 articles and researched studies about a phenomenon called green exercise was examined, proving that green environments improves not only self-esteem, but also mood- especially for those with disabilities and severe depression and anxiety!

  • Being outside can reduce inflammation too!

The extreme of any inflammation can lead to disastrous effects and health problems, including but not limited to bowel diseases, autoimmune diseases, clinical depression, and even cancer.

One study [found significant decrease in inflammation when elderly patients were sent on a weekend retreat to the woods- and it is the elderly who experience the most heightened cases of inflammation!

The outdoors is Earth’s natural, most effective medicine!

It is no surprise that spending time in nature and in the outdoors has significant positive effects that are even proven by hundreds of scientific research studies.

After all, the human race began as a part of nature, and it was for the most of our existence on Earth that we have lived at one with nature. With the rise of commercial, artificial living have increased the instances, discoveries, and “inventions” so to speak of new, unheard of sicknesses.

If we return to the positives of the natural past whole moving forward with the positives of technological advancements, we can as a human race make the most of our time on this planet!

Netflix Launches A Personal Trainer That Makes Sure Your Binge-Watching Has No Chill

Wouldn’t it be great if we could be forced to lose calories while we binge-watch our favorite TV shows on Netflix?

With this new “Netflix and chill” way of life, it seems that everywhere you turn, people are turning to Netflix for binge-watching and laziness-induced practices. Rather than doing something productive or staying fit, this cultural standard pushes for laziness and inactivity- leading to weight gain and health problems.

Even if people try to exercise, their binge-addictions come in the way of setting up an exercise routine.

What if I were to tell you that our go-to streaming outlet of today has found a way to merge both exercise and binge watching- removing the “chill” from “Netflix and chill” and give us our favorite characters as personal trainers to meet our fitness quotas?

Netflix’s “Make It” initiatives produce all sorts of new Netflix-related projects each year. The newest addition to this campaign is the Netflix Personal Trainer.

This Personal Trainer initiative is a do it yourself/modify to your needs personal trainer that you can adjust according to your needs and exercise routine. Even the trainer his or herself is modifiable and depends on your own choosing!

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t want to burn a few calories while binge-watching their favorite TV show?

Here are some highlights of Netflix’s newest feature:

  • Published Instruction Guide:

    netflix

Netflix published an instruction guide  to help you personalize, modify, and use your very own personal trainer on your Netflix account.

Before getting started, it is an absolute must to read this guide and learn more from the creators of the personal trainer themselves.

This guide includes everything you need to know to get started on your personal trainer. It outlines and shows you what exactly the personal trainer is, how it works, how to use the personal trainer, how to personalize, and the uses and application of this initiative.

  • Personalized Character Trainer

netflix

The detailed instruction guide also includes how to modify and personalize your trainer. Yes, there is a trainer. The first I heard of this initiative, I expected it to be a simple system where the amount I exercised correlated with the amount that I was allowed to watch. What I did not expect was that there would be actual character voices from Netflix original series- 14 character choices  to be exact- that you can personalize and choose to be your ACTUAL trainer in the “Netflix and Exercise” process if you are plugged in!

You can choose your personal trainer from three different categories of motivation- tough love, positive reinforcement, or comic relief.

It’s easy as choose your favorite character voice and plug in with your exercise routine! Titus Andromedon from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Pablo Escobar from Narcos, and even Queen Elizabeth from The Crown are just a few of the options available!

  • Motivational Talk

    netflix

Naturally, our binge-watching nation is so not prepared for an innovation like this, and with the likes of a system that is found in many other apps that control our phone or TV time while connected to our exercise machines, Netflix’s personal trainer comes with motivational phrases in the voice of your favorite character.

The most awesome part of this is the fact that rather than standardized motivational phrases, each character voice says things in their own style, through their own identities.

Is Pablo Escobar your guru? Tune into his voice and words of wisdom. Do you find inspiration in Queen Elizabeth? Select her character trainer for “A revolution must come from within”.

Whoever you choose from the 14 options, there is no doubt that your choice will speak to you in their own way!

  • Do-It-Yourself Device

netflix

As outlined in the instruction guide, Netflix allows you to put settings for your exercise routine, and your target. The next step after putting in your settings is to prepare your device so you can plug in.

The device in itself is not something that you need to buy to connect- that would have been a terrible gimmick that may not have attracted many customers. Instead, the do-it yourself device connects to your phone or tablet using Bluetooth, and can be made at home.

Once you are connected, the device uses an accelerometer to monitor your speed and how hard you are working out- and if it is keeping up with your target settings.

Of course, some hardware know-how will be needed (hint- you may need to learn how to solder!) to put together the device, which Netflix provided in a personal trainer materials guide here.

  • Plug In and Earn Your Binge-Watching!

netflix

This is, of course, the practical side of the coin. Of course the character voices and stylized motivational phrases are all good and fun. The real agony begins after you modify your settings and exercise rate.

As soon as Netflix (or, your chosen personal trainer character that is) senses your exercise rate has dropped below your target have stopped exercising completely, it will stop the playback. It will mute the audio, play motivational phrases from the character you chose, and will eventually stop the playback entirely.

Not only will it stop the playback, but it will not let you watch until you start exercising again, and reach your modified settings for your target exercise routine.

This innovation definitely seems like a turn-around from the weight-gaining, laziness-inducing culture brought about by Netflix as a way of life.

It is quite possible that it can actually be a motivating factor in exercising while binge-watching- if you even venture out to bother yourself to set an exercise routine for yourself, that is!

Trying to lose weight? Exercise routine not enough? Can’t figure out what foods to eat? Read NOW for 13 foods that are PERFECT for weight loss!

For some reason or the other, we are all always and inevitably looking to loose some weight at some point in our lives. Most of the time, we get the methods wrong. Almost all of the time, the goal is wrong.

Rather than trying to burn weight and calories through unnatural, extreme exertions, the Earth is full of natural foods that regulate our metabolism and battle weight gain, and work towards a maintained weight.

Start eating the following foods in your daily routine as a supplement to any exercise you may be doing. Not only will you lose weight or maintain weight- whatever your aim may be- but you will find yourself more energized and healthy than ever before!

Here is a list of some awesome foods you can eat to manage your weight- you can eat them in any way that you want, as long as you do actually eat them!

  • Leafy Greens

These include spinach, kale, colliards, and a few others. They have low count of carbohydrates and calories, and have great levels of fiber.

  • Cruciferous Vegetables

These include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. They not only fill the stomach quickly, but are also high in fiber and protein!

  • Beans and Legumes

These include lentils, black beans, kidney beans, and more. These are good for weight loss because they are incredibly high in protein!

  • Eggs

Eating whole eggs is really the best thing you can do to lose weight! Studies show that they are extremely fulfilling and full of protein. They are proven to make you feel full throughout the entire day!

  • Lean Beef

Despite common bad rep, eating UNPROCESSED red meat is actually good for weight loss because it is high in protein- and undeniably very fulfilling!

  • Chicken Breast

Meat in general tends to get bad rep for all the conditions the excess of it can lead to. Rather than eating it in excess, having a good portion of meats, including chicken breast, can really help to lose weight because of the fulfillment in small portions, and high protein!

  • Salmon

Salmon is known for being good as a food for weight loss because it is full of protein and healthy fats- not to mention tons of vital nutrients and vitamins!

  • Tuna

Tuna is not only low on calories, but is very high in protein and is also very fulfilling in small amounts! There is a reason it is called the lean fish!

  • Soup

Obviously, soup is just the mixture of other foods mentioned above with water. Although it seems like there is no difference, studies have shown that there is more satisfaction and feelings of the stomach being full for longer periods of time when eating foods good for weight loss in soup form.

  • Fruit

Some of the best fruit for weight loss are avocados and grapefruit. Other than that, the vast majority of fruits, if eaten in proper portions, are excellent for weight loss and contain the perfect amount of natural sugars! Nothing beats the natural stuff!

  • Nuts

Although they are quite high in the fat-measurement, nuts are not by nature weight-inducing. Eating nuts as a snack in small amounts can curb hunger and prevent entire meals- they are that fulfilling!

  • Whole Grains

Some of the worst weight-inducing foods are grains and breads and rice- and not surprisingly, these are the staples of every meal across the world. Almost every meal is made largely of rice and grains. Replacing white bread with whole grain in more than one aspect can greatly contribute to weight loss- as they are natural and healthier!

  • Yogurt (NOT nonfat!)

In an indirect way, yogurt is awesome for weight loss because it is made of a special kind of bacteria (have you heard of probiotics) that improve your gut’s functioning and this improving not only your immune system as a bonus, but your metabolism rates and your digestion as well!

There are tons of foods out there that are ideal for weight loss, and a few spotlight ones that you eat almost every day and can focus on more than the fattening rice and breads are listed above!

Water Is More Important

Don’t know why water is so important? Read this article NOW to find out just how important water really is- which is much more than you think!

In the modern lifestyle today, only too often do we brush aside the importance of water in our lives. We face such a wide variety of health issues that, attempting to solve them with a tremendous scope of medications. But sometimes, we wonder- is there any natural way?

The truth is, we ingest so many genetically modified foods, and drinks that are so sugar-ridden and made of artificial ingredients and dyes that our immunity is down the tubes.

Unfortunately, with the type of food available on the shelves and in the market, it seems practically impossible sometimes to go entirely organic- with the organic market at times minting money under its titles to attract our fed up consumers, selling without having true value!

Are we without hope?

The fact of the matter is, there is one magic natural substance that, though altered and available in many forms, is still so critical to daily life that we can find it easily in an almost pure form (chlorine exists, but bacteria is gone).

This so-called magical substance that does wonders- and keeps us alive- is water!

All too often we grotesquely misrepresent the importance of water, and why keeping up to date with the 8 glasses of water a day principle is critical in preventing many illnesses as well as keeping us up and running!

Here are some reasons that water is so very important- much more important than you might think!

  • Water is life

Water is the source of all life. When NASA looks to outer space in hopes for new life, or the possibility of life- as seen in many science fiction movies out there- the first thing they look for us water. Water is the basic building block of survival, and a person can live for a week on just water without any food, whereas a person can die of dehydration living without water for just 2-3 days!

  • More than half of your body is water!

That’s right, the majority of our body is made of water! 85% percent of our brain is made up of water, 80% of our blood is made of water, and 70% of our muscles are made up of water! On average, around 50-65% of your body is made up of water! With constant relieving of oneself, and the way water filters through bodily functions and systems, it is almost crucial to replenish water supply to keep our body going!

  • Water is critical to bodily functions

Water is critical in almost every single bodily function you can think of. Even the smallest percentage of water lowering in your body- as little as only a 2% drop- can foggy up your short term memory! Among some of the important, life maintaining processes that require water for proper processing include the absorption of nutrients from your food, chemical reactions inside your body, and proper digestion. With the blood being made up of so much water, is no wonder that for all vital bodily functions where transport is needed, water plays a key role!

  • Water removes toxins

When your food is digested and the waste needs to be removed, it is water that removes these toxins from the body in the end. When we fill our stomachs with too much food and not enough space for water, then our body stores the fat without metabolizing it- leading to weight gain. A good rule of thumb is to keep your stomach ⅓ full of food, ⅓ of water, and ⅓ of air. With the equivalence of water and food, the water is then used to help metabolize the extra fat and maintain healthy body weight!

  • Water regulates temperature

It is no coincidence that when you are hot, your body perspires and leaves you sweaty. This is because when the body overheats, it lets out “water” (read: sweat) to cool the body temperature down to normal. This is why it has become so normative and almost unquestionable to keep yourself hydrated in the heat or when exercising, because you are losing just as much water as you are drinking, and intake will obviously have to increase!

Contrary to belief, dehydration can even happen in the winter months! This is because the dryness  can serve to “dry up” moisture, which leaves our skin dry and itchy oftentimes, our lips chapped, and our mouth dry as well. You can become dehydrated quicker than you expect- so it is important to keep a balanced intake no matter the season!

  • Keep your cells hydrated!

Not only can your body become dehydrated, but on the most atomic level, so can your cells! When you do not take in enough water, it can lead to a serious case called Chronic Cellular Dehydration, where the body’s cells become too weak for functioning. As is obvious, every single bodily function that keeps us alive depends on the proper functioning of our cells. If we fail to keep ourselves sufficiently hydrated, our very bodily functions can slow down!

Now that you know only a few of the many reasons why water is so important and crucial to our daily lives, it will be easier to convince yourself to drink that bottle of water rather than that can of soda when you feel thirsty! After all- you have a body you need to run!

A parting piece of advice- remember that the rule of thumb of amount of water to drink per day is not just 8 glasses of water on average- in reality, we need to drink half of our body weight in ounces per day- (for example,  if you weight 120 lb, the minimum water you should drink is 60 ounces per day, breaking it down throughout the day’s progression in whatever parts you can consume without living in the bathroom!) for the MINIMUM requirements for proper and complete hydration. Tripling this amount yields even better results!

7 Bizarre But EASY Tricks To Help You Fall Asleep At Night!

falling asleep

Having trouble falling asleep at night? Typical remedies not helping you? Read this article for BIZARRE but EASY tricks to help you fall asleep when you need to most!

It is definitely not a joy for me to say that difficulty falling asleep is one of the most common ailments of our present day lifestyle. With the lights and hype of technology, zooming through the fast-lane of modernity it is very hard to unplug and slow down.

However, this is no reason to despair.

Nature is there to provide countless ways to allow our bodies to sleep when we need it most! After all, we need sleep to function most of all!

We all know that having a healthy dose of sleep is critical in functioning our best in our everyday lives. Who enjoys fumbling to work in a half-dazed state drowning in caffeinated movements?

True- we would just love to magically concoct a potion that allows us to snap awake on a moment’s notice, while surviving on well below our doctor-recommended 8 hours of sleep a day, but who’s to say a little remedies here and there can’t do the trick!

Other than the normal remedies ascribed to the ailing sleepless of you out there, here are a couple of bizarre, yet proven tricks that will actually help you fall asleep when you need to most!

  • Power down ALL THE TECH

This is the most obvious of all- and definitely the most helpful. We all know that using technology significantly makes our brains move faster, and consequently, when we are attempting to sleep at night, the glare of the screens does no good to our mind that we are so hard forcing to sleep.

If it is hard to keep laptops and phones entirely out of the bedroom, try keeping them at a distance far from reach from the bed, keep televisions shut off, and attempt to not access them for at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Use that time to read or wind down under natural lighting- your body will take its natural course to bedtime. Tech is tech- but it is not in any way natural, or beneficial to your sleep!

  • You are what you EAT- especially before you sleep!

What we eat before sleeping is unfortunately very often overlooked. To the contrary, what we eat before bedtime- even if it is a couple of hours before, can significantly affect how we sleep. No one case is the same, and different people will- of course- react differently to different foods. The best thing to do is monitor your diet and the effects. Make sure to eat at least 2 hours before bedtime, and not eat anything heavy that will leave you feeling bloated, or anything with too much sugar or caffeine that will leave you too jittery!

  • SCHEDULE your sleep

Interestingly, scheduling your sleep sounds like the weirdest thing to attempt. For the majority of us living in the fast lane, it is easiest to get in bed when our work is done, or when we are most tired, or when it is needed or convenient for our waking ours. However, keeping a timed schedule of sleep per day will maintain a good clock within your system. Our bodies are made with natural clocks that function regardless of what you do throughout the day. For this reason, keeping a balanced schedule with minimal interruptions is crucial to sleep hygiene. Instead of going to sleep at 2 am because you have nowhere to be the next morning and choosing to sleep at 10 pm the next day because you have to go to work at 8 am the next day (hint: weekends), balance a schedule that makes all your days productive and makes it easier to fall asleep naturally on the days that you really need to- without unneeded restlessness!

Also, make sure not to fall trap to too many lengthy naps throughout the day, unless it is a part of your schedule and will not interrupt your sleep at night!

  • Get….cold?

Here starts a few of the bizarre things that actually are proven to help you fall asleep. It is not advisable to freeze yourself and become an ice cube, but it will definitely help you to go to sleep. A couple of ways to effectively use this method can be to turn down the heat and use a blanket for natural warmth, and taking a colder shower than you normally would. You can even go commando and sleep with your bare skin!

On the other hand, taking a warm(er) bath or shower than usual causes a drop in temperature as soon as you leave the tub- causing decrease in heart rate that can allow you to fall asleep even faster!

  • Breathing CONTROL

Slowing down your breathing to standard second by second intervals of breathing in and breathing out helps to slow your heart rate and prepare you for sleeping. Also, the focus on your breathing is soothing enough to bring you to sleep! • Think SOOTHING thoughts

Think about things that relax you to divert your mind from the process of sleeping. Do not, however, think about things of stress or tension that will make your heart rate increase, and wake you up even more- making falling asleep all the more difficult! Think about a scene you would enjoy, or being with a person that you love. Even focus on recalling mundane moments of your day- anything neutral or soothing to distract you from the idea of actual sleep.

  • Sleep ACTING

Pretending to be tired can actual have a placebo-effect of sorts on your mind, and slowly power down your body and prepare it for actual sleep. Think back to the days of your parents checking in on you, making sure you were asleep for school the next day.

Regulate your breathing, think about how things are getting darker, imagine your eyes are drooping, imagine you are sinking into a soft, pillowy bed, think about how sleepy you are- even if you are not! The brain can be convinced more easily than you think- you will be actually asleep in no time!

Falling asleep is definitely one of the core issues facing the people of our generation- with the fast pace of our lifestyles and the impediment of technology. Remember to prioritize sleep patterns to make sure your life turns out more successful- even if it means using the most bizarre, unheard of tricks to get you there!
